From what I've seen, this place is much more like my old IRC channel than it is like Twitter.
That's not a bad thing, mind you. Au contraire.
But it's not what I'm here for. I'm on the birdsite for news and analysis, very little of what I see here.
This is a great place, but it's not my place.
And so I'm outta here, at least for now. Good luck, and thanks for all the toots!
I am genuinely delighted that there is a non-centralised alternative to Twitter. And from what I've seen, you people are a lovely community (or rather, set of communities).
But this is very much not my environment.
The mere fact that many people feel they should hide talk of politics behind a content warning tag says it all, I think.
"Honestly, I am probably a little too mean for mastodon.social. Everyone is nice, but I nonetheless feel like a stranger in a strange land, a complete Twitter jerk stranded in a country of kind-hearted anime avatars."
My feelings exactly!
Excellent, nuanced and very honest article by

#Mastodon update: Admins can now easily close registrations with a custom message. In other news, I have closed registrations to mastodon.social for now ensure a quality of service for all existing ones, and to promote other federated nodes.
Also, this 500 char thing is WEIRD. What am I going to do with all this space?
Makes me realise the degree to which I've conditioned myself to think in 140 character chunks.
Best thing about Mastodon: I'm pretty sure no-one from work is on here. Ah, the freedom! Feels like the early days of Twitter. Like, way back when in 2007 or something.
Guide to new Mastodon users: the furries control the east block, the French control the exercise yard, and the infosec people and gamerdevs have forged an alliance
