extremely rude to sell a 12-pack sampler and make 3 of them a blood orange ipa!!!

seems to be a nearly perfect 1:1 ratio here between old-timers tooting "hey noobs, here's a tip for tooting on mastodon: stop tooting about mastodon" and other old-timers tooting "WELCOME to mastodon noobs, allow me to tell you how this website works" which maps quite nicely to the early days on birdsite when half the time people would be tooting "stop telling us you're eating lunch" and then the other half of the time going into extravagant detail about a sandwich

one thing i'm learning about aging is that apparently a very "late thirties" thing to do is to go out to a bar and think you're really cutting loose and getting massively fucked up when in reality all you've done is order a third beer and then go home and go on an online "shopping spree" in which you order a very modest amount of new winter clothes because you are very careful never to carry too much of a balance on any of your cards, and yet somehow this all feels like a totally unhinged rager

if you were asked to nominate a candidate for "literally the single worst thing in the whole history of computer programming" what would it be. mine is "[object Object]" but i'm willing to expand my horizons

after two weeks of careful consideration since moving bayside i wish to update my official seagull stance from "ambivalent" to "fervently opposed." extremely loud bird, apparently nocturnal, seems to eat mostly trash

one cool feature that i'm very glad made its way into mastodon from all the other social networks is how i feel vaguely nauseated every time i consider posting something

I didn't do an when I joined yesterday, but I will now, because I already like this place a whole lot 😀 I'm Matt, a recent transplant to Bellingham, WA — by way of Moab, UT, Santa Fe, NM, Brooklyn, NY, and three years in the back of a Subaru (long story) — and I came to WA to climb rocks and run mountains and fish the big PNW steelhead runs. When I'm indoors I write software remotely for a startup in NYC. I care a lot about sustainable food, and I'm out of characters now bye 👋

folks i'm an actual paid professional hacker [gestures at 3 monitors filled with JavaScript website code] and can say with confidence i have no earthly idea how this mastodon thing works
