More annoying macOS 15 Sequoia prompts: Bluetooth

lapcatsoftware.com/articles/20

@lapcatsoftware thankfully, looks like you can still turn it off without a confirmation by using the shortcut action, but still ridiculous

@lapcatsoftware surprised nobody has mentioned that the Vista feature everyone clowned on (UAC) was user controllable! You could turn it off! The present dialogs are much worse

@philltopia @lapcatsoftware Yet it was a “sea change” that up until that point, didn’t exist on Windows - the Standard account was so limited that I would be surprised if anyone willingly used it.

I believe it was configurable in the Business or Enterprise versions, but I don’t know if there was a consensus that - as with XP Professional - the Home versions lacked important features that made them functionally incomplete, which might have pushed people to upgrade to a better product.

@philltopia @lapcatsoftware This is to say nothing of the fact that Mac OS X never had the same issue, in part due to its UNIX heritage.

@lapcatsoftware I am convinced Apple has forgotten how to make usable User Interfaces

@lapcatsoftware Also, which is default here… You've got the blue button, but the focus ring is on the grey one… was it moved, or did it decide that the default choice wasn't going to be the first interactive item?

@octothorpe Well, the default just depends on the keyboard shortcut. The focus ring depends on the first responder of the window.

@lapcatsoftware Sure, but they should probably be the same thing in cases like this.

@octothorpe Yes. It’s possible this was an accident. In my experience, many Apple engineers don’t have the keyboard navigation setting enabled.

@lapcatsoftware Or increase contrast, or basically anything that isn't a fresh install, really.

@octothorpe On macOS it’s usually the default for the focus ring to start on the second button (typically cancel). I like it this way since it means you can instantly hit enter for the default action and space bar for the secondary action

@kalleboo good to know. It’s a little weird to me, but if that’s the guideline, that’s good. I kinda wanna go back into the HIG history and see if it’s changed. Curious.

@lapcatsoftware While I find this annoying as a developer I wonder how many people were saved from disconnecting their Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and having to pull the physical power plug of the machine.

Recent iMacs come with Bluetooth keyboards+mouse out of the box and you’ll be surprised at how many people have no idea that this includes the keyboard/ mouse, AirPods . After all Apple sells all this as “wireless, it’s magic” and rarely mentions Bluetooth.

@lapcatsoftware And as you stated in the blog post that wouldn’t matter if they actually check that any Bluetooth input device was connected. That’s today’s Apple : not bad for simple users but they don’t care at all about devs.

@lapcatsoftware What I meant by “devs” is all the people who actually know what they are doing. The so-called power users. Apple prioritizes all the other which I suspect is a vast majority. This makes sure they will not lose their input devices so easily.

I agree the implementation of their fix is very badly executed but I suspect the ticket about it came from a large number of complaints. If Apple cared about us they’d provide “advanced” settings to disable this.
