That conference I'm presenting at - in Second Life - is pretty amazingly prepared! They invited speakers to practice... (conference is on 16 April) If only the warmth of the island and the sounds and feel of the nearby waterfall could jump through the screen. That would be a perfect academic dream. ...doesn't take much to please me!
@lauraritchie Well, the sounds of the waterfall can come through.. your speakers or headphones. But I wouldn't recomend that as SL is good for random noises that have nothing to do with, well, anything.
Avatar could use some bringing up to date but I get that you're probably not on SL all that much and just don't want to spend the money. (Not a criticism, your av looks fine as is, just an off topic comment to be taken with a grain of salt)
@ILuvMsMarvel point well taken!! I was pleased to figure out this much. They are really ambitious and just wrote to people asking them to present and most speakers have *never* been on SL. I'm at least pretty ok with online stuff, but it has still been a learning curve! (a very fun one!)
@lauraritchie You've got some time to figure the whole thing out, if you want any help with anything, feel free to ask. I've been using SL for over 12 years now and I'm pretty well versed in the ins and outs of it.
@ILuvMsMarvel is there a resource/place to look for how to do gestures? My talk is 45 mins with 30 mins Q/A and I don't want to just be the default 'standing'. I'd like to make an effort at least out of respect to the conference organisers. They have done amazingly!!
@lauraritchie You'll need an Animation Override (AO) for that. There are some decent free ones out there. I don't know any offhand but you can do a search in-word (search is up there in the top menu bars by default) or you can go to the marketplace, which you can get to from the main SL site. So you can easily find some and try them to see which you like.
@ILuvMsMarvel I found a few, but I think I need to practice how to use them. I have a co-presenter, so maybe I can just plan a nice 'smile & nod' type thing while he talks. :) I'm being sheepish and only practicing when I know the people running the conference (In America) are sleeping!! -in case I look really clueless...
@lauraritchie Most are pretty much just Turn On, Turn Off with a button. May seem like there should be more but that's basically it. The ones you pay for have settings for different things but that's a whole other ball of wax.
