Apparently YouTube tracks us like mad. They gague interest by length of watch and do loads of geo location... (insert sad face)

DuckDuckGo allows you to watch through them and it proxies it. (I don’t really understand but I’m learning) gives you choices to watch via them, with far less tracking

@lauraritchie apparently they also serve a lot of ads, but thanks to Adblock plus, I don’t see them when on the desktop.

@lauraritchie also, my viewing habits are possibly really predictable anyway:
Blacksmithing
18th century cooking
Some music

Based on that, I’m a closet re-enactor (ie a re-enactor that hasn’t come out as one, not someone that pretends to be a closet).

@lauraritchie
I don't want to be ""ed, but I also see a benefit of a system knowing my interests. I just want control over the degree. Just because I click on something doesnt mean I am completely interested in it.

@Bliswell @lauraritchie me too. I like that in the TV It suggests a related video to play next. But it's kind of creepy when it comes up with something that you've watched and didn't really wanted to see again 👀

@lauraritchie

Oh yeah they do. It's Goog, after all.

Always try to find equivalents on Vimeo. And use Vimeo instead for your own vids. It's still centralized, but not half as evil as YT.

DailyMotion is another option.

The hardcore will say to go with a decentralized choice, which is ideal, but that's still quite a hurdle for most. You do want people to actually watch your videos. ;)

@charlag @lauraritchie @wion peertube is fine but if you still want to reach content on yt then there might be hooktube or what you suggested proxying trough DDG

@tibike @lauraritchie @wion of course! But I was replying to a toot saying to use Vimeo instead

@charlag @wion @lauraritchie I wanted to reply to the first one in the thread, and also suggest the not so tracking ones if you still want to reach the yt content >_<

@tibike @charlag

I was going to mention PeerTube but couldn’t remember the name. I did say “decentralized” though. ;)

I wasn’t aware of the other one.

@lauraritchie

@tibike @charlag @lauraritchie @wion Yeah, DDG and its bangs are really good. For hooktube I recommend using an addon for the browser. Makes it easy.

@lauraritchie ddg uses YouTube-nocookie.com as a proxy. All videos that are embedded on ddg are through that url which seems is not able to track (or removes cookie request).

@lauraritchie I knew YouTube tracks like crazy but didn’t know about the DDG option. How does it work?

@clhendricksbc load it up and search for a vid... you'll see :) It walks you straight through and gives you options you have to choose before the vid plays

@lauraritchie My favourite part about DuckDuckGo is the bangs! function.
Especially the YouTube one, !yt
