I've had to deal with the idea of looking NB since I came out, I've always found it oddly upsetting that I had to be or look a certain way to be considered the gender I am. I tried to put that into words.

I completely agree. I feel that it is because of "masculine" being the default and therefore androgynous must have to be man lite but that is dangerous and unhealthy for everyone. It's deeply frustrating and means everyone who does conform to this idea, no matter their gender, is seen as lesser or without a place.
I thought this was great, and clarifying for me, too 💛
@lilprince This was encouraging to read--I often feel like I have to pick between wearing what I want and having a chance of not being misgendered, and tend to dress defensively "masculine" as a result. It's super frustrating -__-.
@lilprince I always appreciate your takes on gender and fashion!
Just a half-formed thought: Even well meaning cis people trying to grasp the concept of non-binary genders and expression can end up conflating it with something they know and are comfortable with: the hairless masculinity of androgynous fashion. It's that same trap of seeing male as the default, and it shortchanges everyone.
