GitLab "Ultimate" and "Gold" for self hosting now free for education and open source.

This is GitLab taking this massive opportunity after Microshaft swallowed GitHub and making the best of it.

The more people are moving over now, the better their own future will be in the long run.

GitLab also make migration easier, starting the campaign with a straight-forward video etc.

GitLab is open source itself, too.

@linux Not only that, but it also is going to add support for federation (like Mastodon has), which means you can fork it if you don't like the direction it's heading, or want to host your own instance.

GitLab unfortunately offers a bit of a shaky hosted service. But in their defense they are transparent about it and they are trying to improve.

I am using GitLab for its free private repositories and these are great. But for production I have found out (the hard way) that this is not a replacement for GitHub, at least for now.

The free self hosted GitLab version is another matter.
