Samsung is bringing DESKTOP LINUX to its smartphones!

The mobile giant has this week announced the ‘Linux on Galaxy’ project that, it says, will give smartphones the capability to “run Linux-based distributions on mobile devices”.

So if you dream of using the smartphone in your pocket as a desktop Linux PC, you’ll be pleased to know that Samsung clearly shares it.

> Could smartphone giant Samsung succeed where they failed?

That's the question.

@linux It's bad enough people see them as synonimous with Android as a whole. We don't need that for Linux.

@RandomASCII More alternatives / passage gates towards Linux, the better though? Common Android users most likely don't have a clue it is Linux underneath their favorite mobile OS...

@linux I imagine this is an unpopular opinion in the Linux community, but quantity is only good if quality follows it. Look at the desktop experience. There's Ubuntu, a clunky mess of an OS for a project with millions sunk into it, run by a company which is ridiculously flaky with anything they do, Gentoo, a nightmare for new users practically by design, and thousands of distros in between.

@RandomASCII Ubuntu is a clunky mess? Well, they are in a state of transition anyway. Canonical is getting their stuff together now more prominent than ever. User percentage has risen substantially and it brings more work. Have you ever heard or thought to try a fairly new Linux distro called Solus? It is a thing at the moment... A true desktop distro with amazing new solutions for Linux computing.

@linux I have. I was waiting for Budgie 11 to ship, but it seems like that might take some time. For now, I've personally settled for Debian "unstable". But my point wasn't about what I like. It was about how easy it is for a new user to get overwhelmed when they look at how many distros there are. Especially since the numbers are inflated by distros that are literally just a GTK theme change and different default apps. *cough* Pop!_OS *cough*
