This just about sums the situation up 😫

My class on disinformation and misinformation has decided to build their own conspiracy theory. (Don't worry -- rule #1 is that this theory stays in the class).

The part I really find amusing is that they're using skills and techniques from marketing and PR classes to do it. (I mean, I know very well that PR and conspiracy theories have a lot in common. I'm just amused that this was the first move the students made to realize their theory).

Decentralization is not the goal. The goal is information and communication services that respect human agency.

Open source is not the goal, the goal is building a commons of software that is free to study, inspect, and improve.

I feel like, as implementors, as people who spend our lives in the digital crawlspaces focused on the details; its easy to lose sight of the why behind the how. I think important to periodically step back and refocus on why we are doing things the way we are doing. What is the desired world state?

If we taught every kid in school what kids of the wealthy and powerful are taught at home we would have societies full of sociopaths.

Instead, we have societies of mostly decent people led by a relative handful of sociopaths.

I feel we should probably do something about this.

#Fediverse is much more than 'just-an-alternative' to traditional #social media. It's a complete paradigm shift and that insight is crucial. It relates to the “unique selling point” with which we should be able to attract the right people to evolve the technology landscape.
