Any Intro To Mastodon thinkpiece that doesn't acknowledge that it's existed since 2016 and was essentially first colonized by a bunch of gay communist furries (and later: game devs, circa holiday season, but that's less important) is totally useless imo
@lmichet yeah seriously, the seed community is really important for the guiding norms (and subsequently how that influence updates on the interface and so on)
@lmichet yay homosexuals! :heart:
@lmichet and now i know!
@lmichet I wasn't here for pre game dev gay furries actually, just assumed that connection was always there
@plsburydoughboy yeah when the game devs arrived they gay communists were already here, as I recall
@lmichet so why did the devs show up here? I assume it was something to do with another GG attack on them
@plsburydoughboy I arrived with the game devs. initial game dev overlap was also explicitly antifascist game devs as I recall. We were mostly here to toot "fuck fascism" I think, and everyone was particularly pleased that nazis were not allowed. I don't think we came here because of a specific event-- this just fills a need that a lot of game devs have I think. social media that keeps out the ooze from our own community
@lmichet @plsburydoughboy Yeah I don't remember where specifically I heard about Mastodon but I think me and Laura got here independently around the same time?
@brunodias @plsburydoughboy we probably saw in on twitter. I came here from a recommendation from an antifascist game dev on twitter
@plsburydoughboy @brunodias and we follow a lot of the same twitter people
@lmichet @plsburydoughboy yeah (our corner of) games twitter is weirdly insular in general
@lmichet I remember seeing that latter sentiment when I first came in here. I probably found my way in cuz of a game writer or three who migrated here and said they were leaving birb site
@lmichet @plsburydoughboy it was more or less simultaneous by my reckoning, within a day or so. but the gamedevs mostly backed off because some of them are brands
@Triplefox @plsburydoughboy yeah the game devs who stayed are the antifascists/gay/furry/very tired of mainstream social media ones. strong overlap
@lmichet @plsburydoughboy @Triplefox I mean if you make a venn diagram with most of those I will be summoned so...
@lmichet so colonization gives you claim to it? you just had to use that specific word?
@lmichet Huh. While this is very interesting I don't see how it's relevant to all think pieces, nor is it so easily discovered by people who may want to comment on the current state of Mastodon. I'm curious about where you got the information.
First user boom was explicitly antifascist members who wanted a place to toot "fuck nazis destroy capitalism" at likeminded folks. This is why you are seeing the community norms you are seeing. They are good norms for people who fled twitter due to nazi harassment and that's why I joined: for the company of active and explicitly anti-nazi community-members
