this framing of human rights as optional, government-dependent benefits is incorrect, dangerous, and must be resisted

the thing about human rights is that they are, by definition, inalienable. rights are not special benefits granted to us by the government, they are inherent to all of us as human beings. governments might abuse, deny, violate, restrict, or otherwise fail to recognize and protect our rights, but those rights don’t just vanish.

you’ll see phrases like this all the time: “women won the right to vote,” “the board ruled that the employees have the right to unionize,” or even worse, “same-sex couples were given the right to marry.”

no. the government didn't “give” people new rights they didn’t have before, they decided to stop violating the rights that people have had all along. big difference.

One of the unexpected joys of the fediverse over other places is the addition of weird domains appended on to everyone's usernames.

It makes the web feel like more than just four websites again.

How to make me weep with passwords in 2022:

Have a maximum length shorter than 128 characters.
Not have a minimum length.
Filter what characters can be in the password (except \0, not allowing \0 is fine).
Require periodic password changes.
Send me the password in clear text in email after registration.
Send me the password - or any password - in clear text after requesting a password reset.
Have the option to reveal the password after registration.
Disable paste.
