Pinned toot

Hello! I'm Stephen, and here's my post.

I've been a lawyer for about 8 years. For about 6 years I represented marginalized folks in Ohio's courts, mostly appeals. For the last 2 years I've worked on systems and data stuff for public defenders. Now I live in New York and work in the Bronx.

I work with , , process and systems improvement, , , , and where all that stuff intersects. Let me know if you wanna talk about any of that!

If anyone's looking for me, I'm not here anymore! I've moved over to @makingarecord.

I am working from home for the first time in my life since... law school, I guess. And it's hard to adjust to, because it was not at all commonplace when I worked A) in Ohio and B) for state government. It's nice! My cat is near me while I scope changes to our case management system!

Worried about the dominance of big instances? No, really, this is quite natural.

As an emergent and self-governing system, it could be expected that the size distribution of #Mastodon instances roughly follows Zipf's law.

Does it?

At first you see the top 6 instances, and then the rest. But on a log-log scale the size distribution is close to a straight line, which would be expected from an emergent system.

Goodhart's law - "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure."

Once you pick a metric to evaluate human performance, increasing it becomes an incentive, and people will immediately start to game it. They'll ignore it's intended purpose and take any short-term shortcuts to maximize the number.

Founders may grow vanity metrics, raise more money, or increase number of employees whether or not this benefits the company, just because these numbers turned from metrics into goals

A year ago this rally drew hundreds of open neonazis. Today it drew twenty. They admit it’s because they don’t feel safe. This victory is due to militant and occasionally violent antifascist organizing. I'm seeing folks pledging to deactivate their Twitter accounts on what they're calling . I like the theory, but leaving aside the elitism of being ABLE to delete your Twitter account, a lot of people are posting about it on Facebook, which is... not better. Maybe worse.

I’m at ReUse Fair today with our maker space. The bio-hacking group in the next stall is putting us all to shame.

Open-source software isn't really my area, so I would love anyone's thoughts on this:

Amaroq is already a pretty solid iOS Mastodon client. And, it's open source. So why are so many people talking about starting their own clients? Why am I not seeing, like, "hey here's my Mostodon client, and it's Amaroq, but with updates, and I have the time to keep it updated"?

I know I might be missing something here and it might not be that simple. Hoping to learn!

At hacking conference and just learned how easy it is to physically gain admin access on a voting machine that is used in 18 states. Requires no tools and takes under 2 minutes. I’m concerned for our upcoming elections.

Things I *don't* like about #Mastodon so far:
- it feels very, very white dominated, with little visible #POC presence (at least compared to the bird site).
- I actually really miss the preview cards for links on the bird site. They worked really well for visual people like me.
- it's almost impossible to preview another instance without signing up first.
