@mala more seriously, there's actually a really interesting difference in conception around parenthood and family between people who were raised with those things as major bastions against oppressive structures (most racial minorities in america) vs those for whom their family is a major vector for their marginalization (most queer people).

I would be fascinated to read an anthropological study that contrasted the two, although you don't have to be a genius to see the way it's shaped communities+priorities

@nightpool @mala I had a similar experience on the Cypherpunks mailing list, which was, like WHERE AM I HOLY FRICK.

@nightpool @mala you can't ever fully contrast queer people and racial minorities because… that tends to leave out all the queer racial minorities. but on the flipside i don't think it's hard to see how the combination of these two factors can leave our queer youth of color especially vulnerable.

@kibi @mala oh yeah by "the two" here I mean "the two methods of support", not POC vs. queer people or anything like that. obviously this picture is doubly compounded for people who intersect these areas.

@mala @aldeka

I read the original tweet as talking about tools to evade censorship/surveillance, which people could potentially use to bypass parental controls, and people talking about how to make an exception. I think the "gay teen" case is highly relevant there, and the "toddler on YouTube" case less so.

@mala depends on the age of kid, i really don't want my four year old to have unfettered access to youtube. There's creepy emotionally disturbing stuff that gets recommended. Teenagers run the risk of pick up racist & sexist messages. But then kids do need to learn how to socialize on their own with their friends
