Please keep in mind that not everyone is in a privileged enough position to be able to delete Facebook or Twitter, that they need it for staying connected with their network etc.
However, you can still encourage them to start building a new network here, and you can help them by recommending them directly to an instance you think would fit them!
@rysiek I like it!
@maloki Agreed, I am telling people to come over and build a new #community here, but promote this on their existing networks, and the most commuted of friends will start coming over.
Others will be more conventional and will always remain on #Twitter only, but they should still be encouraged, and you can have two different sets of followers and two different tones of voice on #Facebook and Twitter, versus #Mastodon.
I wish somebody showed me mastodon sooner then they did, so I promote it now
@mareklach this is beautiful, yeah I'm very lucky that my friend @sargoth showed me Mastodon almost a year ago now!
@maloki i like this toot. I work in a place where Facebook is the primary means of communication.. cell service can be unreliable, folks don’t use email, they’ve probably only heard about twitter or Instagram in the news, but Facebook provides communication, info on events, a place to coordination sales or trades, etc! I wonder if geographic Mastadon instances could work..!
@maloki I think of using Mastodon while using Twitter/Facebook as being like finding a safe space away from an abuse situation that you aren't able to leave. It helps you stay centered to have positive people in your life to compare to so you know what's up and what's down amid all the algorithmic gaslighting.
@Riley I love you sometimes <3
@Riley @maloki I was banned from Twitter for direct ad hominem insults to Trump's account, I think. They still haven't addressed the issue specifically with me, and maybe they won't ever do so. And I completely left Facebook. I have an empty shell Facebook account that's tied to my Instagram account which unfortunately Facebook owns, but I'm done with both of those platforms at least for the foreseeable future.
@maloki Agreed. Leaving FB and Twitter would also leave them peopled by souls who may just feed off each other into a death spiral.
They need moderating opinions.
@maloki I’m new to Mastadon which was recommended by a trusted friend who is in #deleteFacebook mode, same as I. How do I discover other instances?
@Ozzied there are a few ways. the easiest, I daresay, is to browse the federated timeline and look for interesting material, and see where it comes from.
@Ozzied @maloki because you see people are posts from everywhere it can happen naturally. But there's also https://instances.social/
@Ozzied You can do various things. You can first of all use https://instances.social or https://joinmastodon.org to find an instances that fits your interests.
Then again, you can look at the federated timeline to find interesting people form other instances.
And of course you can look for #hashtags you like, using the search :)
And finally you can wait for some friendly people to reply to your toot after it showed up in their federated timeline 👋
@maloki exactly. This is super important. It's not either-or.
Even setting an account here as an addition to one's walled-garden accounts means that it becomes easier for other people to move here 9since more of their friends are already here).
Had an idea for "Prison Break Day" a while back:

Perhaps it's a good moment to resuscitate this idea. ;)
