I've found that the best way to introduce people to mastodon is to immediately suggest them a server.
Even if it's an invite only server, you can message the admins that you have someone in mind for ther server and would like an invite link to send to them.
It helps a lot. This is how you'll get friends and family on here.
@maloki yeah they get very confused when reading about joining.
Tho I haven’t actually just sent them link to a general instance 😆
@maloki I post more pics on insta than birby site.
It’s like duplicate pic posting everywhere which will bore ppl I reckon if they’re on the same apps as me which some are!
@maloki yep. that’s why usually post stuff everywhere if can be bothered!
@maloki that is my experience as well!
@maloki yes, that's exactly where things fell down when the last wave of mastodon interest occurred and I tried to invite family and friends. Telling them to "pick an instance from this list" results in too many choices. Comparing it to email with "gmail vs hotmail vs Yahoo" didn't help enough to get over the initial barrier of "how do I even sign up for this thing?"
@BrookeTyler Server, instance. Two names meaning more or less the same thing.
You're in switter.at and I'm on mastodon.social.
If i had sex worker friends I'd recommend them Switter.at hands down.
But as I had a friend who has pets and adores pets, I recommended her to join @minego 's birb.site instead, and they are/were invite only, so I sent a generated invite for them to join.
