I've found that the best way to introduce people to mastodon is to immediately suggest them a server.
Even if it's an invite only server, you can message the admins that you have someone in mind for ther server and would like an invite link to send to them.
It helps a lot. This is how you'll get friends and family on here.
@maloki yes, that's exactly where things fell down when the last wave of mastodon interest occurred and I tried to invite family and friends. Telling them to "pick an instance from this list" results in too many choices. Comparing it to email with "gmail vs hotmail vs Yahoo" didn't help enough to get over the initial barrier of "how do I even sign up for this thing?"

And at the same time, is that such a bad thing? Like. Maybe growing by people slowly trickling in isn't a horrible terrible thing, maybe it's just absolutely fantastic? :D
