So.. My boyfriend tried to search for / today... He ended up mainly finding listings, not people speaking Swedish so he could practice.

I saw someone else bringing up that location hashtags in general have been swamped with switter.

Suggestions came up about something algorithmic to deal with it. Which is an issue in and of itself. Something we don't want to do.

Question to @switter are the listings feature you added separate, or federated?

I'm looking to come back to this conversation tomorrow, as I've got things to do now.

But I wanted to bring it up while it was at the forefront of my mind.

I confident that we can work on it together with @switter and figure out a solution that works for everyone.

@maloki @switter I don't get any of that. Probably because the instance I'm on doesn't federate much with Switter. I'm curious though how Sweden is related to them?

@loke Sweden itself isn't but switter is Sex Worker Twitter moved over to Mastodon, and listings will be hashtagged with locations, so providers can connect with hobbyists.

Does that make more sense now? :) And m.s is quite connected wit so we see a lot from here.

@maloki I see. I thought it was mostly in the US since the creation of the instance was in respond to some US law.

@loke Nope it's not. And yes, it was in response to it, but it's hosted by an Australian team.

@alternative_be that sounds like a joke. But yes. That too.
Is mostly because they use location hashtags of cities and countries to find matches.

@maloki @switter perhaps introducing negative search could help? `#sweden -#switter` ?

@lupine
What about make a toggelabe nsfw or a cw hashtags? But yours is probably a better solution
@maloki @switter

@lupine yes, thank you! Unfortunately it doesn't necessarily solve the problem for certain users though.

But it's definitely a good thought.

@maloki I think we're in a slightly odd place at the moment due to the relatively outsize nature of switter.

Give it a year or two, the listings effect will be far less noticeable.

I saw a suggestion elsewhere for CW-filtering searches, which could be considered another extension of negative search.

@maloki @switter I've been feeling this pain about hash-bisexual too unfortunately

@maloki @switter I was pondering how I would deal with this on a full-featured search engine, and it was like... if all ad posts from Switter were tagged with a particular tag (like #switter) I would search "#sweden -#switter". Or there would be a setting to exclude particular instances from this hashtag search, or to exclude #nsfw posts from search if we want to be SW-ad-specific maybe. But that involves making the hashtag search more complex, which may not be helpful for non-power-users!

@cassolotl Yeah I'd really want it to be a solution that my aunt (who's more computer illiterate than my mom) could not fuck up (she's also an out lesbian).

@switter

@cassolotl at the same time NSFW is a very problematic term, as we know.

@maloki Of course, but my understanding is that Gargron and the devs are reluctant to change it because there's nothing else comparably well-known. Perhaps the @switter folks have a proposal for a replacement term, that'd be cool!

@maloki for searching for folks speaking the language perhaps #svenska would work better?

@fluffy Yes, ofc, but he's native English so naturally it'd be for him to search for Swedish. :)

It's not about what he could do better here, because I can tell him that, that's not what I want to have a conversation about. i want us to have a conversation about how we can live side by side without using algorithms for hashtags :)

@maloki I think such generic hashtags are always going to be full of stuff other than what you’re specifically looking for. It seems like searching on language usage specifically would be better served with Mastodon’s language tagging (which needs a way better interface).

@fluffy Oh, that's an entirely new feature. Which actually would be nice to look into.

@maloki @switter I gotta remember this one “No, honey, I swear, I was searching for sweaters! I don’t know how I ended up on @Bettiebrickhouse ’s profile! Fucking autocorrect...???”

@donblanco I mean, I'm fine with you joking with me. But i'm actually trying to have a real conversation about what we can improve, in my role as a PM for Mastodon, I want to work out these things with the community.

You know? (I don't want the people I tagged in to get tons of joke replies every time I write something public)

@maloki sorry, didn’t intend to copy them. Also I guess I need to just follow personal accounts. I don’t want to have to analyze and scrutinize every toot just to avoid a faux pas. Carry on

@maloki @switter I see this a lot too. Perhaps posts tagged could be default filtered out? Or a user setting default filter certain instances in search (with a show all link).

Support the project (@switter) but the search listings for places are getting a bit crowded. The search is very dominated by these listings.

@andybroomfield I do not have this problem because I mute their instance from my own account. Also nsfw tag seems to capture any sensitive content (ie politics, mh etc) even if they don't have that tag and user sets it with a 'sensitive media' option

@superruserr thanks for the info. That makes sense. Didn’t know you can mute from account.

@superruserr the sensitive media NSFW tag is being removed because of these kind of problems, and because it was a hack. That's probably why.

@andybroomfield we're also getting server side keyword muting, for users, soon™, it's a WIP.

@maloki @superruserr @andybroomfield is nsfw tag the same as tagging with content warning? Also asI probably didnt get the fediverse thing completely yet: my timeline is free of p0rn :)

@ao37 I'm not 100% sure atm. But, in this case it was tagged on in other ways, with the sensitive description thing.

It's technical mumbojumbo for me, and I'm trying to straighten out what's up with that.

@superruserr @andybroomfield

Semantic hashtags with namespaces!
