This is because changing pixels to and from pure black is slower than changing to and from other colours.

What does OLED black smearing look like? In this example, the dark grey square seems to be lagging behind the light grey square, but they’re locked together. (Needs to be viewed on an OLED screen.)

Depending on the brush and direction you smudge, you can create clouds and other things as well.

A technique for creating furry things: Render as a shiny solid, then smudge it in Photoshop with a bristle brush.

Some animation fun with my 6 year old daughter. Next step: Buy some tracing paper and help her with a full run cycle.

Interesting: new dark macOS theme uses on dialog backgrounds, and all 1px tiling problems @marcedwards found are fixed.
