Masto.host

There is currently a DDoS attack going on in the Masto.host infrastructure.

Some instances are affected. I am investigating and will report once I know more.

The attack continues and traffic is being filtered, so it might be slower than usual.

Still, from my testing 99,9% of instances hosted are working and over 50% are not being affected at all.

I will continue to monitor and update with more information.

BTW: you can read what a DDoS (Denial-of-service) attack is at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-o

After a combination of efforts, things are looking much better now.

There should be little to no impact now.

I will continue to monitor the situation.

All is looking good now.

For a couple of hours that I have been monitoring the situation and can't find any problems.

Hopefully the attack has been resolved but please do let me know if you notice any problems on your end.

Again, sorry to everyone on servers that were impact.

I will continue to work to make these kind of attacks less of a problem in the future but it's a hard problem to solve and it will take time.

Thanks 🐘

@mastohost Thank you, definitely annoying, and makes me really wonder why people bother and can't leave other people's stuff alone.

@mastohost that's a vivid example why the decentralization matters.

@leo Everywhere :) No detailed information at the moment

@leo @mastohost One characteristic of a DDoS attack is that there is no single source, unfortunately.

@mastohost Is it very naive of me to ask who has an interest in making a DDoS attack on Mastodon? Are there only bored idiots?

Everything still works fine here.

@aniho91 Only some servers are affected.

People can do DDoS attacks just because they are bored and want to see the impact of their "work" or in an attempt to extort people into paying them to stop.

@mastohost Thanks for all the effort in fixing this situation. #opshugs

@mastohost Really appreciate your service. Thank you!

@mastohost Thank you for all the hard work. Luckily I didn't notice a lot from the attack.

@miekeroth Over 50% of servers were not affected but glad it wasn't a problem for you :) Thanks

@mastohost great work! Would you have a view who is directing this attack?

@BobbingAlong Thanks.

Not really, I can see the location of IPs/traffic but that gives me little information on who was behind.

@mastohost Glad you got it sorted, and I know you do your best with what you can, really appreciate all the effort, and love my little instance, so thank you for that as well.

@crazydutchy Glad you are enjoying it and thanks for the support :)

@mastohost I see in the dashboard how most storage is now freed up. Is that a result of this episode?

@mastohost oh nice! It went down from 25 GB to 4.5 for me, so that’s way more than a third :)

@collectifission great, it’s doing what it’s supposed to do then :)

A shout out to Hugo (@mastohost), who single-handedly fought off a DDoS attack on Masto.host yesterday. Thanks for your dedication and for keeping us updated. 🐘

@adam Well, I wouldn't say that I single-handedly fought off a DDoS attack :P There were a lot of people involved (OVH, other admins, etc) but really appreciate the kind words ♥️
