Pinned toot

I'm no longer wondering if I'm on the right mastodon instance. I've moved to focused one: jawns.club. Instance as locality feels like the perfect fit. Instance == neighborhood. Please follow me over there! @mattmcmanus

Imagining if Mastodon called instances "neighborhoods" instead. The metaphor works really well IMO and doesn't sound like robot-speke.

Considering a Philly-centric Masodon instance called jawns.club. Would be public and moderated (account invite by request) so I don't really wanna run it alone.

Anybody interested? Anybody wanna co-moderate? Must love Philly, have some experience and interest in communities. Actively avoiding an all white dudes membership and mod crew from day 0, so let's play.

Going from Twitter to Mastodon helps me remember a time when Twitter was a less well tuned dopamine delivery system, without the constant barrage of ego gratification, outrage and novelty. It competes by doing less

Today I deactivated my Twitter account.

I was on Twitter for more than 11 years, and had a verified account with 30,000+ followers.

I visited their office when they were 20 people (meeting with Ev) and again when they were 3,000 people.

It is such a relief to get rid of something that has turned into one giant plastered-with-ads-and-forcefed-clickbait mess of harassment, bots and Nazis that is steered by a spine- and clueless leadership team.

Hi again, Mastodon! 👋

My favorite things about Mastodon, Vol №1

1. Per post privacy settings!
2. Delete & re-draft (includes original post text, privacy settings, etc. in new draft)
3. Structure profile metadata! (via @hankchizljaw)

The constant addon major version upgrades merely as a result of the addon upgrading it's own dependencies does not feel ideal. I can't think of a better way to go about it though. It's stressful to see the breaking change to only realize everything is fine.

I leave to head back to the US in less than a week! Bah! I will miss many things about Guatemala, but 15 hot, fresh corn tortillas for 5 quetzales (67 cents) may be the at the top of the list.

I've read about technologies under the umbrella of the "Indie Web" before but never really leaned into it. I'm categorically compelled by the idea now! It feels like an attempt at reclaiming some of what we've lost on the internet: indieweb.org/

After a month and a half in Guatemala, I can say with confidence that the internet we’re making is terrible. It’s bloated, slow and not very resilient. If my boss thought I was annoying about PWAs before this trip, he hasn’t seen nothing yet!

I can't remember how many times I've looked up http status codes. This little workflow will save me countless seconds of my life.

I spent some time tonight tweaking the mobile and large desktop layouts of the book reviews on my site. I still need to improve how quotes look, but It’s starting to become something I really like! mcmanus.io/2018/book-review-th
