has anyone written critically about the way that modern AAA videogames aspire to be a "total art", an art form that subsumes all other art forms or makes use of all available channels to convey experience? most of what I can find on the subject is uncritical celebration

@maxkreminski I get stressed just thinking about how massive AND massively detailed things like RDR2 are. Like a cathedral that should have taken a century to build, but somehow was made in just a few years.
Personally, I prefer a more focused approach, using impression and imagination to fill in some of the detail. I love the selective channel usage in indie and older games, and I don’t think those techniques should be abandoned in games with higher budgets.
