As part of their aggressive attempt to get people to replace their old headsets, Facebook's Quest 1 headsets, released in 2019, will be barred from purchasing any app on the Quest store released after April 30, even if that app would have supported the Quest 1 when sideloaded.

The aggressive deprecation schedule really makes me baffled why anyone would trust Facebook with their money here. This is a novelty/nice-to-have device, not something you upgrade every 2 years.

Forbes · Meta Issues Warning That Impacts Many Quest Headset UsersBy Andrew Williams

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to explain this to anyone, but I still think the best Oculus device was the Go

That was the hyper-light headset with the hyper-simplified controller that sold for just $200. It was great. Looked nice, felt better to wear than any VR headset I've ever used and I've used a lot of them. I had ideas for software optimized for that weird little controller

@mcc have you tried the recent Quest 3? Curious about this one

@valeg I have a quest 2, it is sufficient

@valeg @mcc a friend who has it said that if you don't use the AR features it's very close to the Quest 2 and not that much better.

@mcc I never used one, but I'd say another reason to love it is the full root access available: developer.oculus.com/blog/unlo

That was thanks to John Carmack, but of course now he's not working there anymore... it would be nice if they continued that tradition with the Quest 1, especially considering what they're doing with official support.

@mcc I never tried an Oculus Go but it sounds like a good niche. Did you ever try a Google Daydream? I quite liked it. It was about halfway between one of those mobile device VR viewers and a Quest, all the supported phones it used could do asynchronous reprojection on the GPU and it came with a small motion controller that stowed inside the HMD. It was fun to develop for and very cheap if you had the right phone. It's too bad we don't have many devices in that range currently.

@mcc Meta buying Oculus instantly killed the VR-hype for me. I don’t allow IP-packets from Meta in my house, why should I allow spying and wiretapping equipment?

@mcc If that sounds like hyperbole, search for ‘facebook onavo wiretap’.
