@micahflee I bought an almost identical set, some years ago. I found it to be disappointing: the practice look was way easy, like five seconds on first try, and the lock picks were entirely unsuitable for the kinds of locks we actually have here (they're no not pin-and-tumbler style).
But I am certain that a 12-year-old will find it fascinating.
@liw @micahflee Are there any alternatives that you would recommend?
@lx242 @micahflee Alas, my lock picking hobby didn't survive that initial practice lock.
@micahflee nice!

That is an AMAZING idea for a 12th birthday present! It conjures up images from Terminator 2 of young John Connor and friend hacking ATMs for "easy money". Here's to your nephew continuing to become the savior of humanity!
@micahflee If he's anything like my son, once things go back to normal and you socialize again, you'll find him setting up an impromptu lockpick training session at your next party.
@micahflee which set did you get him? can you link it?

It was about $30, but it looks like it's out of stock now. There are several similar ones though. Honestly it would be nice to have one with a lock that isn't quite so easy to pick -- I need to buy my nephew a real padlock now to practice on
He managed to successfully pick it within the first five minutes, and he's obsessed now
