At Mastodon, we present a vision of social media that cannot be bought and owned by any billionaire. Your ability to communicate online should not be at the whims of a single commercial company!
“Why were Bolivian river dolphins swimming around with a large predatory snake in their mouths? ‘There are so many questions,’ one researcher said.” https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/02/science/dolphins-anaconda-bolivia.html?referringSource=articleShare
There's a lot said about "wokeism" like it's this new radical movement of young people. I just went round my parents' where they have all the classic UK TV channels and watched some Hale & Pace-considered broad and mainstream in, like, 1991. Sketches included a bit on Estate Agents being overpaid assholes, a bit about Tories being scum, and a person in a KKK outfit introducing himself as a police commissioner.
Daily reminder to consider image descriptions when uploading your media :D
Image descriptions are used by our blind and partially sighted users who use screen readers; the readers read the image descriptions to describe what's in the image.

Please consider using them - we like accessibility here
Is it weird that I just purchased a manual-only lens for my digital camera? I actually want to be forced to look at my subject whilst turning a focus ring back and forth! I am absolutely sick of that beeping electronic green rectangle jumping around the viewfinder as an algorithm guesses what I want in focus. ... Wait, just remembered that I bought a mechanical wristwatch recently too. Maybe I'm becoming a Luddite? #photography #technology #keepitsimple
So long Wordle—Knotwords is my new daily word-game obsession
I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
Here's my column about the #Fediverse and how it shows the way to a better, more inclusive social media future. @ me if you've (re)joined Mastodon, or another fediverse app, in this new post-Musk era. https://thenewstack.io/the-fediverse-points-to-our-social-media-future-post-musk/
