“You are personally responsible for becoming more ethical than the society you grew up in”. – Eliezer Yudkowsky

I take it as a personal obligation to follow anyone who has heard of--let alone lists as their favorite--the film "Barry Lyndon"

@miguelclarkmallet everything is perfect in "Barry Lyndon"! It's a masterpiece.

@melyanna I'm a huge Kubrick fan. Usually his films eventually get their due, even if they're criticized at first. But "Barry Lyndon" still seems generally unknown/underrated.

@miguelclarkmallet I have noticed that as well; always wondered if it is because the subject or the genre aren't as popular.
I feel like if you say "Kubrick", most people will immediately think of his sci-fi and horror works.

@melyanna I think part of it is the genre and part of it is the length. A lot of the humor is very droll too. I don't know if the pace is one many filmgoers these days are willing to be patient with.

@miguelclarkmallet I agree about the pace, though even when I was much younger I have never found it to be too long or slow, so maybe a lot of this is prejudice?
Or maybe it is because it does take a while to get used to the rythm in the first few scenes, but once you are absorbed in it, it doesn't feel slow at all (or maybe I am biased :D )

@melyanna I'm definitely biased in the same way. Also, I was drawn in by how simply visually beautiful the film is. The landscapes, the use of light, the whole visual world is amazing.

@miguelclarkmallet same here. It is simply beautiful. And the way the visuals are paired with the music is also amazing. Even superior to "2001: A Space Odyssey", in my opinion.

@melyanna I think you may be right. I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen once. This conversation is making me want to watch it again!
