I'm no longer wondering if I'm on the right mastodon instance. I've moved to a focused one: jawns.club. Instance as locality feels like the perfect fit. Instance == neighborhood. Please follow me over there! @miketannenbaum@jawns.club

Here's my !

I live in and work as a and with USA Today. I also host a (coming soon).

I've come to Mastodon because I miss those final, non-monetized frontiers of the Internet. Stumbling upon obscure blogs of people who were creating art not for influence or money, but for pure passion of a hyper niche topic. I miss those pioneers who used the Internet to expand their minds, not close them.

May Mastodon be our Manifest Destiny.

Hey, Masto, I'm a certified audio producer that works freelance developing strategy and producing and radio spots for businesses and organizations. Most recently I created a podcast for a digital design firm in Philadelphia.

So if you have audio production needs and are in the /#philadelphia area, hit me up? If not, boost this anyway?

Dear news tooters: Content Warnings are one of the most awesome features Mastodon has to offer — please use it accordingly, when referencing newsy topics.

For example my personal threshold on politics is extremely low, — even on posts that align with my political views —, and I think in times like these many do feel the same way. "Uspol", "Gerpol", "EUpol", etc. are super helpful. Please, and thank you 💜

Mastodon cured my Twitter addiction, ask your therapist if Mastodon is right for you.

New here? Remember that Twitter is optimized to make you into passive consumers, by en(r/g)aging you with content that you don't choose yourself.

Here, that doesn't happen. But it also means you're responsible to find people to follow.

It will take some work.

If you're willing to put that in, you'll find a wide variety of friendly people that will be happy to have meaningful conversions and laugh and cry together with you.

Start by searching and looking at who other people follow.

@miketannenbaum on mastodon, the only limit is your imagination

Imagining if Mastodon called instances "neighborhoods" instead. The metaphor works really well IMO and doesn't sound like robot-speke.

@miketannenbaum here's what you need to know:

- you can follow people on any instance, and be followed from any instance (unless you block or are blocked)
- your instance is kinda like a neighborhood.
- your home timeline is just the people you follow
- your local timeline is just the people on your instance
- the federated timeline is all activities across all instances
- search only works on hashtags, so is a good starting point
- be friendly (duh) and don't be a Nazi (duh)

Just for the record: I love Mastodon.

Is it the end-game of the peer-to-peer, decentralised, end-to-end encrypted personhood-protecting platform(s) we need? No. Is it fucking awesome? Yes.

(Do I love you, @Gargron? Yes, I do) :)

It’s a beautiful brick on the bridge we must build between the centralised and peer-to-peer worlds.

Now let’s use it like the stepping stone that it is, be thankful that it exists, help make it even better, and interoperate with it on the road to greener pastures.

Who has a good Mastadon primer I can read so I can bring myself up to speed?

*he says to a crowd of six*
