Happy New Year fedifriends!
I'm excited to officially announce the launch of TheIndieBeat.fm, a streaming radio station showcasing indie #music from the Fediverse.
The Indie Beat Radio is made possible through a collaboration with Bandwagon.fm / @benpate
Music artists who upload their work to Bandwagon.fm have the option to make tracks available for streaming on TheIndieBeat.fm
Our goal is to use federation to make less work for artists — upload once; distribute infinitely.
You'll find a roadmap for The Indie Beat here https://theindiebeat.fm/roadmap/
And here's a detailed update from Ben at Bandwagon https://bandwagon.fm/67564da504431a2c35b67fde
We're both super keen to get feedback from artists and listeners. And we're excited about the larger ecosystem we hope grows from our model of federating
Also, here's a link to Ben's announcement post on Mastodon
Many thanks for the boosts
I want to give special thanks to Radio Free Fedi and the human who goes by "the hamster" who's been the primary force behind it.
He's been an incredible source of wisdom and support.
While RFF streaming is sunsetting, they've got exciting things happening going forward. So please do keep your eye on them. The Indie Beat Radio will be collaborating with them at every opportunity.
Oh oh oh! I also want to think the delightful @limebar for making a Roku app for The Indie Beat Radio
We're still waiting for Roku to deign to fix their shiz for developers. But we'll let you know when it's available.
How cool is that of limebar, though?! Only happens in the Fediverse, man.
@mizkirsten
Ah, i see. It's a thread!
@mizkirsten @benpate wow this looks amazing! I was so sad to see Radio Free Fedi going away but it looks like this initiative can take on some of that loss really well and hopefully be even stronger for it!
Thank you!
This certainly won’t replace RFF.. it’s been its own special moment in time. But I do think it’s the beginning of something new and awesome.
Please give it a try, and “pardon our dust” as there are still many details to nail down.
Thank you! I'll echo what Ben said and agree that nothing will ever quite replace RFF.
But thanks to everything we've learned from RFF, we'll stay artist-first and help build the future of music in the Fedi
Plus, the RFF crew is gonna be doing some new things in a new way soon. So we'll be supporting and collaborating at every opportunity!
@mizkirsten
How can I follow?
How do I get there? I am very interested.
The links are without protocol and not clickable.
@benpate
If you listen to music, start here: https://theindiebeat.fm
If you make music, start here: https://bandwagon.fm
And if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands
@benpate @jele @mizkirsten Ohhh this is very cool. How do we connect WebScrobbler to these services? https://web-scrobbler.com/
Hey, this is a great suggestion.
It looks like we can just make a connector and ask to include it in their code base. I’m not sure, because I’m not really familiar with WebScrobbler.
I can do some digging and ask in their discussion forums, though.
Yes, that seems right. I have never contributed to web-scrobbler, but I am sure they would welcome more connections/sources. https://github.com/web-scrobbler/web-scrobbler/blob/master/.github/CONTRIBUTING.md
It's awesome to watch these fediverse music projects blossom!
Thank you for the link! I really appreciate your help :)
I have put this in my project list: https://github.com/orgs/EmissarySocial/projects/1/views/1?pane=issue&itemId=95178535
Web Scrobbler would be an excellent integration point for Bandwagon sites. I think the more open APIs that we can support, the better off everyone is!
@mizkirsten @benpate This is so exciting!
@mizkirsten @benpate i like how the fediverse is becoming a sort of safehaven for otherminded individuals and artists, hope it doesn't die a slow death like diaspora a decade ago
@mizkirsten @benpate Hi there! Is there a way I can submit my audio fiction to a station? It's all spoken word, fiction, live readings, and otherwise. I used to be on Radio Free Fedi!
I'm not aware of any reason you can't upload spoken word files to BandWagon. But of course only @benpate can 100% confirm.
Be sure to include "spoken word, fiction" and anything else that makes sense as the genre(s).
Uploading to BandWagon and checking the TheIndieBeat.fm box will automatically add your tracks to TIBR.
I'll watch out for and create a channel for them. That'll be exciting!
If the BW route isn't feasible, nudge me. We'll upload direct to TIBR.
@mizkirsten @benpate Unfortunately, it’s not feasible, so I will message you soon to make a direct upload
