and then there's bowie, in his late space/clown phase

how have I never watched the ashes to ashes video? (besides the fact that it's kind of terrifying) I've been listening to that song a lot in the past few years

@mrgah Ziggy Stardust was an awesome persona.

@mrgah Okay, no, seriously, how have you not seen the Ashes to Ashes video? Or am I just showing my age at this point?

@pompomtom

oh, I assume most people have seen it: I just grew up on a strict diet of PBS and broadcast TV in the US, so my knowledge of music videos is pretty scattershot (and also, I was -2 years old when the Ashes to Ashes video came out)

@mrgah Just discussing this with the SO who was TV-deprived for most of her childhood. She’s not seen Xanadu, clip or film. Suppose I should give it a rewatch if I can find it.

We had four channels of TV as a kid (no such thing as cable here), and on Sunday night there was a slot of “News, news, news or countdown”, and we kids would chorus “COUNTDOWN!”. So 80s video clips are the ones I know best.

@mrgah OK, two more 80s vids you have to see (inspired by the music in my local): Howard Jones - “What Is Love?” (top song, top hair) and Nik Kershaw “Wouldn’t It Be Good” (for the cutting edge visual fx).

@pompomtom

you weren't kidding about howard jones' hair! still not sure I get the video, though; and the nik kershaw one is great on all the levels

(though if we're talking 1984 singles, I am a fierce partisan of laura branigan's self control and that bonkers wm. friedkin video)

thanks!

@mrgah I went to that Bowie exhibit that was going around a while back, and I’ve seen (some of) the actual costumes!
