Thane of Groans

This seems like a pretty insightful comment. Quite a few franchises having this problem right now. MCU one of the very rare exceptions.

<< Seems to me the core problem is a desire to “beat the internet”. If a plot point has a logical setup it will be worked out and shared by the enormous “hive mind” of viewers interacting online. The only way to beat this is by doing stuff without setting it up (they call it subverting, but whatever)>>

Thane of Groans

Part of the problem is that sufficiently viral franchises start to feel like they're designing an Alternate Reality Game rather than telling a story.

You sweet summer children

"there are no heroes, good people don't exist in the Gritty Real World (tm), there is never anything more to anything than people slaughtering each other to get to the top" WAS THE ENTIRE SELLING POINT OF BOTH THIS SHOW AND THE NOVEL SERIES IT WAS BASED ON

it's like you all started reading HP Lovecraft and then went 'but I don't understand, why did the Old Gods suddenly turn so nasty after all that buildup, I was rooting for Squid Guy, he was my hero'

Disclaimer:

I think the idea that heroes don't exist is both silly and boring and also dangerously wrong

but I don't understand how all the fans of the show missed that this was a show about bad things being done by and then happening to bad people, who are all of the characters without exception.

I'm sure the TV show is written worse than the novels, but, don't expect the novels to be *sweeter*, they have never been about sweet.

Also: if ASOIAF is inspired by US politics circa Nixon, as I think I've read GRRM say once, then I guess maybe the dragons are nuclear weapons and Dany is the USSR.

I mean maybe I'm wrong and GRRM finally finishes the books and they're straight-up Disney Princess tales.

But I don't think so.

Nihilism is what this has always been about. GRRM is a comic book writer and the series was born at the height of the 90s comic Grimdark wave.
