I can't even remember how many years old I was when this book F@&*^D ME COMPLETELY UP RIGHT IN THE HEAD

but it was single digits

man, Brad Steiger plus David Spangler plus Betty Brock

I might be lucky not to get my face melted clean off with that combination

page 24 and the bad stuff hasn't even cut in and yet the quiet, Terminator-like sense of mounting dread omg

page 29: OKAY THERE IT IS i'm gonna just stop reading right here until I'm in a safe space

cos it's not just the weirdness of a military-spec magic talking dog governness, it's also the spookiness of being a very small kid in the house of a very powerful and distant parent-figure who doesn't much like kids, that's what makes it so nail-bitingly intense.

It's these two utterly weird and scary situations and the talking dog is NOT the scarier one, for a kid

No Flying in the House

oh no

no no no

Annabel Tippens, DO NOT TRUST THAT CAT and/or ancient cosmic force of evil

No Flying in the House

terror given visual form

No Flying in the House

NO ANNABEL DON'T LEARN FORBIDDEN MAGIC FROM A SENTIENT CLOCKWORK CAT WHICH IS AN INCARNATION OF PURE COSMIC EVIL

or do, I mean what could possibly go wrong

No Flying in the House

ok so (spoilers) it does end happily

ish

It could very easily be a side story from the American side of the Harry Potter universe.

No Flying in the House

It's a beautiful, powerful little story but frankly it's main power over me has been that, the first time I saw it, I was never allowed to finish reading it (because it got me too worried), and by the time I was old enough to realise that adults don't always make good decisions, it had gone from libraries. Or was somehow blocked from my mind at a deep level.

No Flying in the House

@natecull
I was all geared to flip through this after your reminiscing, only to discover there's only one "available copy" and it's "on loan" (to you, I'd guess! :D)
Fuck capitalism, JFC
Fun to see you reliving some childhood. I'll look forward to reading it also.

No Flying in the House

@cathal Returned!

Quick, grab it while you can. :)

No Flying in the House

@cathal and yeah, artificially-created, machine-enforced scarcity in an age of digital abundance sucks. :(

No Flying in the House

@natecull
This being my first experience of the "Open" Library.. I didn't realise it was DRM'd and returned instantly and deleted account. But I might try to source a physical copy, looks like an interesting book for its time. :)

No Flying in the House

@cathal Yeah, the DRM thing is why I avoided signing up for a long time. You can read online without needing the toxic Adobe stuff, if that helps.

The 70s were indeed a very interesting time for children's literature.

No Flying in the House

@natecull that sounds like the plot of PMMM.

No Flying in the House

@natecull thank you i gotta read it now

No Flying in the House

@algorev you definitely gotta!

No Flying in the House

@natecull @algorev I've read it, now. It was really good.
