The Facebook creepy-phonecall-stalking thing has hit Ars Technica

I have pulled my Facebook history and I don't see any phone calls logged. But then, I deliberately chose NOT to install the app - I access it only via website, just to try to restrict the potential for this sort of crud.

<<If you granted permission to read contacts during Facebook's installation on Android a few versions ago—specifically before Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)—that permission also granted Facebook access to call and message logs by default. The permission structure was changed in the Android API in version 16.... Google deprecated version 4.0 of the Android API in October 2017—the point at which the latest call metadata in Facebook user's data was found.>>

@natecull I discovered this morning that I cannot uninstall the facebook and instagram apps from my Android. I can only make them not visible on my apps page. Grrr. Gotta figure out how to revoke permissions now.

@ThisQueerBashesBack @natecull disabling it is probably enough. It's just that your phone manufacturer baked it in so it's part of what's there on first startup.

Last time I looked into it, seemed the only difference between disabled and uninstalled was just getting the free space back. The apps won't do anything at all.

You can probably remove them if you root the phone, but if you're not going down that path anyway it'll probably be fine as it is.

@mike @natecull
They installed during an update (which was fine then since I did use them both), which is possibly the thing I hate most about having a smartphone. I get one with enough room for the apps I want, and as soon as there's an update I lose the space I wanted. I had to replace a phone after only a year. It had 4 gigs of available space at purchase and at the end of a year I couldn't have any apps of my own, just the uninstallable ones, and even those ran so slow as to be unusable.

@natecull god knows what data fb have now because usage of my whatsapp D:

@natecull Oh dang that reminds me to look over my file that I downloaded last night. Thanks!

@natecull I had a look and I'm the same. I stopped installing their app when the permission scope suddenly grew a few years back. Have never installed Messenger at all.

@natecull Bingo! I refused to install it (or twitter or gplus or...) on my phone for that reason 😣
Of course, your info is still in FB somewhere. All it takes is having had just ONE friend who let FB tap their phone contacts... yours got slurped up then. But at least it couldn't eavesdrop on you on your own damn phone...
