#Guix is now in #Debian experimental! 🎉
“Packaging Kubernetes for Debian”:
This raises key questions: bundling (“vendoring”) and its implications, contemporary #FreeSoftware development practices and their impact on distro relevance, avoiding/resolving technical disputes, and more.
The #Guix hackers are very happy to announce the first online Guix Day Conference on Sunday November, 22nd. This #conference is open to everyone and will be held entirely online. Want to speak? Submit your proposal!
Talks will be released from the 14 to give everyone a chance to watch them, whatever their timezone.
I am convinced that what #linux needs is an accessible (for non-technical users) #nix or #guix based distro with graphical install, package management, system configuration and revision/generation management tools, so that common people can benefit from reproducible package management and configuration without becoming sysadmins or developers.
I ache for the day when I don't have to recommend new users to use some Ubuntu-based distro just because they're the least terrible of all the non-programmer options.
Funkwhale 1.0 - first release candidate
Funkwhale 1.0 first release candidate is here! 🎉
This is mostly a bugfix/enhancements release but there are a few interesting new features too!
- A brand new search page
- It's now possible to launch a scan from the UI
- Themes and language are now persisted accross sessions
- A new plugin system, with a scrobller plugin
The full changelog is available at https://dev.funkwhale.audio/funkwhale/funkwhale/-/releases/1.0-rc1
This releases requires python 3.6 or higher to run, so be sure to check your server before upgrading.
If everything goes smoothly, we intend to publish the final 1.0 release in a couple of weeks, around september 7th.
In the meantime, we'd really appreciate if you could test it and report any bug or issue!
It seems #glimpse has caught the attention of Davies Media Design!
@cwebber Oh absolutely, and they completely know better. The only good VPN ad is the one Tom Scott did where he was like "A VPN company tried to sponsor a video but they wouldn't let me actually explain what a VPN does and what it does and doesn't protect against, so I'm just going to explain this anyway and not mention the VPN company."
@cwebber Not to mention a not so subtle hint at abandoning Firefox with the "We have to focus on the products that make money" bit 😬

Confusingly COVID-19 is blamed, but I don't understand how that could be the case unless it directly correlated with losing specific funders. COVID-19 seems like it could also be an opportunity to close unnecessary offices, dramatically reducing costs.
- This probably means even more browser takeover by chrome
- Vague "pivot to products" talk
- Executive pay keeps going up https://twitter.com/withoutboats/status/1293188958705168384
Hello, #Funkwhale friend! We are looking for contributors, and maybe you could help us!
We're currently looking for development help, but there's lots of other ways to contribute. Give this new blog a read, and share with anyone you think might be interested. And @ us with any questions.
Getting Involved With Funkwhale: https://blog.funkwhale.audio/~/Community/getting-involved-with-funkwhale
TL/DR: Proprietary software is not inherently evil. Open or Free software is not inherently “good.”
Restrictions are not inherently “bad” if they prevent those with significant socioeconomic power from disempowering or disenfranchising others.
There are no werewolves.
There are no silver bullets.
This is why it’s so important for us to consider alternative licensing models.
#OpenSource, (Like MIT) is powerful, in that it grants optionality quite broadly.
#FreeSoftware, (Like the GP) tempers that, in that it requires re-contributing some portion back to the commons.
#EthicalSource intends to create maximum optionality for non-malicious actors.
#CommunitySource prioritizes sustainability through mutually beneficial, enthusiastically consensual relationships.
