@io To a point yes, although the Favourite button also has confusing messaging associated with it — it feels like favouriting something is more a signal of agreement than it is of acknowledgement. I would agree that typing notifications are the least bad of the three, and I can certainly see that online status might be useful in some cases, but the fact that these things seem to be on-by-default is what bothers me most. Wonder how much stress and misunderstanding in the world is caused by this.

@tost @makeworld As one of the developers of Dendrite, part of what’s contributing to the slowness of development recently is that I’m currently on over 2 weeks annual leave due to moving house, there are other projects going on and our time is divided in the team as a result. We are painfully aware that there are a lot of features still to be added (like cross-signing) and they will come. We have been very forward though in saying that Dendrite is only for the adventurous at this stage.

@cjd @jgoerzen I’d like to add that one of the primary goals of the Yggdrasil project, and all of the accompanying research that we do, is to build a routing scheme which can scale into the future. It’s very much an iterative process — cjdns has had some scaling problems in the past without the assistance of the Route Servers, Yggdrasil’s greedy routing scheme as it exists today also has some scaling issues (albeit at a higher node count ceiling) and we are continuing to find ways to fix that.

@its There’s still quite a bit of optimisation to be done particularly around database and memory usage.

The biggest thing using up space in the database right now is actually state blocks, which appear to be quite leaky, so that needs fixing. On dendrite.matrix.org that table is a couple hundred GB and way way bigger than any other table!

We do have a query to clean up unused state block entries, but it can take some time to run on a big database...

Honestly, I stand by the choice of Go for Dendrite. First-class concurrency primitives, pretty good performance, easy enough to read and understand for new-comers, excellent cross-platform and cross-compilation support.

All of that aside, one of these days I will learn Rust. I’ve been putting it off for long enough—I’ve just never felt particularly motivated to start.

On the topic of programming languages, it’s also interesting to see that the Go generics proposal was accepted this week.

As someone who works with Go everyday, both for work and for personal projects, it feels like a reasonable proposal. It gets the core elements of generics in without adding too much complexity to the language specification and without too many surprises. Most importantly, it’s backward-compatible and won’t break existing code!

I realise that most of the world is focused on Rust but I am personally much more interested in seeing Swift become more widely supported on more platforms.

I believe there’s space in the world for Swift outside of the Apple ecosystem. It’s an elegant, expressive and safe language. I’d love to see it as widely accessible as C or C++ are today.
