don't know if i've ever heard anyone who isn't racist use the phrase "political correctness"
@nico I prefer "we used to call it courtesy" - better for putting them on the back foot.
@nico Selective hearing, no doubt.
@nico I have but it's usually just because they're naive
@nico David Mitchell, but ironically
@nico The thing that bugs me most is that by any honest usage, their definition and examples of "political correctness" are SO OBVIOUSLY themselves ~politically correct~.
Like, you wanna TALK about "things people react overemotionally to and try to shut you up real quick if you mention"? 'cause BOY DO I HAVE...
I am not racist, but I have used the term "political correctness".
Granted you've never "heard" me use it.
@supergoose how do you define "political correctness", and what examples can you provide in context? what would qualify as "politically incorrect"?
I define "political correctness" as [the definition that comes up when I google "political correctness"]
And examples... where I have used the term "political correctness"? I don't keep track of when I use the term, or the context, but it is probably used with friends, in a way that many would find offensive.
I'd say, in general, something is politically incorrect if I'd say it around my friends, but I wouldn't say it in a professional environment (or something even worse than that).
@supergoose So... "the avoidance [...] of forms of expression or action that [...] exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against."
And if you routinely marginalize or insult socially disadvantaged groups, but only around your friends, that's OK to you?
any time anyone hears that just correct them "oh do you mean human decency"
