Why? Mozilla exits the fediverse and will shutter its Mastodon server in December
@nixCraft because it's Mozilla
@nixCraft my theory: cutting down costs in prevision of the revenue loss from Google paying Mozilla to make Google it’s default browser, caused by the defeat from Google on court on a antitrust case, brought by the Departement of Justice of the United States of America.
Sadly, Mozilla didn’t cut on AI crap.
Edit: typo and added "my theory" to make clear it’s an opinion.
@nixCraft because they need the server to run IA
@nixCraft Because they just struck a deal with Palentir to sell all the collected data.
@nixCraft@mastodon.social Did we really bullied Mozilla to leave?
@nixCraft Here's hoping that LibreWolf is at least not being equally compromised. Mozilla really needs to change tacks.
@nixCraft
First we had the Google Graveyard, time to start a Mozilla Graveyard
@switch this will not help. But I liked to remember some the nice ideas they came up with. The best for me #firefoxOS.
killedbymozilla.com/
@nixCraft I can see why running a server for users is not a great fit for them.
However, they should definitely have a presence here. Either a one-account server, or just an account
@nixCraft I read they only had 247 monthly users on that server. There are plenty of others can accommodate that.
@nixCraft my cynical bet: they thought they gonna milk it for additional money in some way to pay for all those poor hard working people on the top. browser for mozilla is a tertiary issue nowadays.
@nixCraft it's a closed beta anyway, Mozilla is turning evil since a long time
@nixCraft shame, but at the same time this shows the power of mastodon / open source. You can just download your data and move over to a different server. Try doing that with the former blue bird or the F-site.
@nixCraft If they shut down their Mastodon but still exist on X, then it's obvious to anyone not totally blind where their influence is coming from - and as consequence, where they are headed.
