7 things all kids need to hear
1 I love you
2 I'm proud of you
3 I'm sorry
4 I forgive you
5 I'm listening
6 RAID is not backup. Make offsite backups. Verify backup. Find out restore time. Otherwise, you got what we call Schrödinger backup
7 You've got what it takes
@nixCraft all of those need qualifiers for WHY those things are the way they are. Except the one about RAID. Should be self evident to even a child.
6.5 incremental backups are your friend, as long as you train on restoring them often.
6.6 don't be afraid to ask questions
6.7 what did you get on your shirt? Is that dirt or soup, and how?
6.8 ZFS replication is also not backup
6.9 I will be proud of you, no matter what you become
@nixCraft Is schrodener's cat still a cat if there's no cat? Does it being non-existent change it's live/dead quantum state or is that the same?
@nixCraft absolute BASED and gnu-pilled
@nixCraft 2 could be replaced with "I see you," and 6 with "Your data is important."
It's empathy, all the way down.
Value that, in yourself and in others.
and... remember that #6 one too.
@nixCraft Always pick open source!
@nixCraft "You are right, I was wrong about that."
@nixCraft don‘t click on links in emails
@Erklaerbaer @nixCraft
It's this and not passkeys or some other shiny new toy that makes you phishing resistant
@Erklaerbaer
Not for me either! On the surface they look like public key authentication made worse: the one you have less control over, tied to a particular device/browser or relying on someone's "ecosystem" for synchronisation across devices — leading to even greater centralisation, due to which to a greater degree phishing attacks became so effective in the first place…
@nixCraft
@Erklaerbaer @nixCraft
This reminds me, I even started writing an extensive reply to someone before, in which I explored why I don't like the idea… But forgot to post it
I should find that draft and post it on my gemlog instead
@nixCraft@mastodon.social
I'm about to do an embroidery of this. Wonderful!
Not sure if i'll finish it in this decade.
@nixCraft @stufromoz per item 6, that backup should be whatever you can wrap your head around. Something like Time Machine is just as good as something richer and more featured if that’s what you can deal with. It’s analogous to the idea that the best camera is the one you have on you.
@nixCraft 8. If you don't know how to use it, you're not a user, you're a player.
@nixCraft And remember, snapshots are not backups!
@nixCraft is raid redundant array of inexpensive disks or redundant array of independent disks
@nixCraft 8/ Indent with tabs or spaces, never both.
@sirwumpus @nixCraft 8-A vimgolf dictates fewer keys is better, thus a single tab wins.
@nixCraft My fave for pretty much everyone is:
"Know when to stop"
@nixCraft
I worked at a company where we asked for a restore of data. After several days we were informed that the tape in question was lost somewhere in the flatlands of Illinois.
@nixCraft Thank you for reminding me to talk to my kid about RAID and proper backup procedure!
@nixCraft my high school tech ed classes had a poster they made: "Thou Shalt Save. Thou Shalt Backup".
@nixCraft i feel like too many parents skip 6.
Especially among those who remember all the others.
