I boosted @GinnyMcQueen's toot about this earlier, but Yonatan's response to the Google manifesto deserves a non-CW toot. I know and trust Yonatan and there is substantial wisdom here. https://medium.com/@yonatanzunger/so-about-this-googlers-manifesto-1e3773ed1788
@noelle @GinnyMcQueen That's a super interesting read. The section on what engineering actually is is a tremendously interesting piece on its own.
@noelle @GinnyMcQueen Everyone needs to remember that the alt-right (as-such, not taken as including traditional neo-Nazi groups, the KKK, etc) came out of tech-bro culture (consider, eg, Mencius Moldbug).
This stuff is absolutely par-for-the-course, and a big part of why we need to take control of our own technology.
@noelle @GinnyMcQueen 🙇 thanks for sharing, this is wonderful
RE point # 2: as a young engineer, i had an anger problem, always on defense. clients asked for changes and i would be mad. my boss would ask for updates and i would be mad. i was so fucking convinced that programming was about me + computers and not me + other people + eventually computers.
this is the shit that needs to be taught early in tech; if you can't deal with other humans you can't do this work
@GinnyMcQueen @noelle and my job is so much more rewarding now that i spend time working with my coworkers and thinking about what actually solves problems. at this point in life, the tech isn't even the interesting part anymore 🤷
a big part of why i took the job i did and moved my whole life was because it was a company with a super empathetic environment and lots of fucking amazing people to work with
uhhh i guess TL;DR yes this post is right
Well, more reasons to stop using google services.
@jaymeskeller @GinnyMcQueen To be clear, everyone I know at Google is shutting the manifesto down pretty hard.

@noelle @GinnyMcQueen Because I agree with most of what Zunger says, I regret he felt he needed to belittle “low-level” skills.
If coding were that easy, software wouldn’t have so many bugs.
Thought experiment: imagine an auto executive talking about the huge gap between his prowess and that of “his” assembly line workers. Now think of the Zunger essay. Notice a similarity?
@noelle @GinnyMcQueen
"If someone told you that engineering was a field where you could get away with not dealing with people or feelings, then I’m very sorry to tell you that you have been lied to."
Cishet men who are like this are entirely too many in number and they are all fucking ridiculous.
