Watching the referendum in #Catalonia, I'm of several minds.
On the one hand, Spain shouldn't be repressing the referendum by force; acknowledging the result is a different matter.
Also, the Catalonia separatist movement goes back a long, long time, and has its roots in imperialism.
On the other hand, a major reason Catalonia wants to secede is that they're Spain's 1% and don't want to have to pay taxes to support the 99% in the rest of Spain.
@noelle I tend toward letting nations and groups decide their own fate, whatever that may be. But the point about the economic motivations of this vote is well taken.
@noelle @brownmattb
spain has a fascist and corrupt institution. It was build by the same ppl who have been participating under franco in the spanish holocaust.
catalonia was one of the strongest resistance against the dictatorship and they suffert a lot for this.
Even the PP is buid by Fraga who has been a minister? under Franco responisble for massmorder.
Spain is corrupt as the police is and worse they have made some years ago a military 'police'
@noelle "On the other hand, a major reason Catalonia wants to secede is that they're Spain's 1% and don't want to have to pay taxes to support the 99% in the rest of Spain."
This is as accurate as saying that native americans fought the colonists because they where the 1% who don't want to pay taxes to support the 99%.
Sorry, but this is more fascist propaganda that an accurate fact.
@noelle Keep your thoughts coming. I need more context here. I'm a dumb american leftist.
