2. The verb "to enter" comes from the German Ente, meaning a duck: German traders in the past often were told to "duck" when going into the houses of English merchants due to low lintels over the doorways in England. Asking for the translation of "duck" and finding it was "Ente" (the bird), the Germans assumed this was a quaint English saying whenever someone went into a house and the association of "ente" and going inside gradually made its way into English as well.

How to Live the IndieWeb Dream

I've posted this in a threaded conversation hidden away on my own website, but it really needs to be highlighted as its own post, so I'm putting another copy of it here for discoverability. Thanks Chris (@fncll)  for your kind compliment. I'd welcome you and anyone else to come join me. There are a bunch of us out here who are ready, willing, and able to help!

You can (sort of) verify your identity on Mastodon if you own a website.

1. Go to Edit Profile > Appearance > Profile Metadata, add your website address (including https://) to the metadata section.

2. Copy the verification code into your website's code. (The verification code is next to the Metadata section)

3. Click "Save Changes" after you have done all of the above.

Your website will then be listed on your profile with a green background and a tick next to it, proving you are the owner.

PSA: The "verified" symbol you see on Twitter etc means absolutely nothing on Mastodon or the Fediverse. On here, symbols like :verified: are just custom emoji that anyone can use and put after their name. Don't be fooled! 😁

There are ways to verify your identity on here, but the :verified: symbol is not one of them.

The easiest way to verify your identity is if you have a website that people already know is yours. You can paste a special code into your website which will verify your address and it will turn green on your Mastodon profile (see here for instructions: mstdn.social/@feditips/1062741).

Alternatively, you can set up a server as a subdomain of your known website address. For example, the European union set up their own Mastodon server at social.network.europa.eu, and we know it really is the EU because the server address is part of the EU's well-known europa.eu domain.

PSA: To everyone who is #NewHere, and those who are not.

When you use hashtags it can help those using a #ScreenReader to use #CamelCase. Screen-readers can then find and pronounce the constituent words, rather than trying to pronounce the whole thing.

It's not essential, but it's one way we can make the Fediverse more welcoming.

Rien n'a changé. Si, tout le monoe est sur Teams.

Has anyone any experience with an Facebook Group alternative? I'm animating a community but would like to propose a (FOSS) solution so that users who want to leave FB or who don't want to have an account there can participate. Preferable not selfhosted but also not a mailinglist

@shiranui_zanki si, hay, preferences->other ahi puedes eligir las idiomes que quieres ver.

Oma died the following day I posted this. We hadn't had a chance to say goodbye to her, even remotely.
We provided several screens to different homes so that at least some families could talk to their relatives stuck in isolation. As we didn't put any tracking software on it, we don't know how often it was used.

They just need to plugit in and all done. The jitsi room will be a 6 digit random number, it's not brute force safe, but we can't ask any one to enter a pin code, this should work without mouse or keyboard and it should be easy to communicate by phone. We can use a selfhosted server so privacy should be more or les ok. If a pincode could be set with a url parameter, but I couldn't find a way to do so. If someone has seen a similar project, please advise, so we can take input.

My Oma* (92) is living in retirement home and since we're all in confinement, no one can go for a visit. They do have a tablet, but my grand-mum can't handle it and is even not able to use a phone anymore. She doesn't see and hear so well any more, videocalls on a tiny screen doesn't work. So my brother and I are looking into bringing a RPi connected to a tv set with a webcam to the home. With an script that connects automatically to a jitsi meeting room at boot in kiosk mode.

Tutorial: Build a simple chat app with Site.js

I want to take you step-by-step through building and running a basic chat app using Site.js. It’s much easier than you think, so fire up a terminal window, grab your code editor, and let’s get started!

Moi je trouve que quand il pleut fort, on devrait fermer les tunnels au automobilistes bien au sec et les réservés au cyclistes (allé, et au 2RM) surtout à ceux.lles qui ont oubliés leurs KWay à la maison.
