There is something beautiful how a business run social infrastructure is dying in the face of a thousand people running their own shit, together
The systems that used to be in place to keep free speech protected have failed us, because the people who intend to limit said speech have learned to game the system
Subsequently every action taken now to improve actions vs Nazis, abusers, etc will necessarily erode that ideal of free speech
So, social networks have to think of the big picture, and really contemplate what they want their communities to be
Are we to protect minorities? Are we to harbor Nazis? Do we tolerate grey areas?

Some folks on birdsite are tagging our project account in tweets like "hey jack twitter should copy this thing mastodon does". The idea that this is merely about features is short-sighted. Twitter will never, ever, ever be your friend. They are the shareholders' friend, not yours. No feature will let you see what their engineers are working on, what's under the hood. No feature will fix their headquarters in the US following and enforcing US laws and customs worldwide.
ok, so thesis: we may eventually discover that deliberately resource-constrained computing / computationally sparse environments / limited networks are necessary features of a technology that can keep a civilization alive very much past the development of general purpose computers.
on that note, i'm gonna try to start using worse computers for more work, in the hope that it'll funnel out some of the torrent of horrible bullshit that fancy computers keep dumping into my brain.
