It's ok because STATISTICS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. They work really well, but if you think about them for too long and too deeply, you fall into a transcendent state. That's also how we know that statistics are pure science. Anyway, back to the topic ...

In every project I've worked on in the last ~5 years (python, ruby, javascript, scala) running a single test from the suite using a typical build setup was 1) awkward/clunky and 2) a FAQ.

How about `<buildtool> test <name of test>` works, plus on test failure it suggests that?
