How do people deal with Sales Driven Development (apart from moving on to another company)?

Is it really as widespread as it seems or have most companies got the message now - or can it be made to work somehow?

The more I look at my Twitter feed the more I know I need to build my Mastodon one - what a sad, sorry place Twitter has become.

Sooo... wow... okay a lot of people shared the previous post! Welcome again to all the new members!

It might be good if I clarified how Mastodon works, as some people think they need to sign up on multiple servers etc.

Short version: You do not need to sign up on multiple servers! Don't have FOMO! One server works fine!

Longer version:

Mastodon is a federated network, which means it's made of lots of independent servers that talk to each other.

And... everyone uses federated networks all the time! You probably use them so much you never even think about it 😮

Telephones use a federated network, so does email.

You only need one phone to call anyone anywhere. It doesn't matter if they're on another phone company or in another country, because all phone companies are federated together into a single network.

That's how Mastodon works. You get an account, and you follow people you're interested in, and they appear in your timeline. It doesn't matter if they're on another server.

Mastodon's monthly active user numbers have risen by 84,579 since the Twitter buyout story broke on Monday (and I do mean across the Mastodon network, not this server)

Yep, that's Visual Studio Code running on Ubuntu running on a 2013 iMac .... why?

Well the iMac was no longer supported and not receiving OS updates and I'm Cornish so throwing it away is not an option.

Also, with Windows 11 not being compatible with my hardware and showing signs of being littered with adverts I want to see if I really need to use Windows on my own system to develop my side projects etc

Hmm - currently unable to upload any photos .... progress bar gets to the end but it still says 'Uploading' and the 'Toot' button is disabled.

I'm a newbie here, is it a reputation thing, a server load thing, a browser thing or something else?

As one of the main Mastodon developers, I can't promise you that Mastodon will be a complete and exact Twitter replacement for you, but it may fit your use-cases, at least it does for me.

Just keep in mind that it is not exactly the same thing, some core design decisions are different (there isn't an unique centrally-governed website, but many interconnected servers operated by different individuals and organizations) and thus the tradeoffs can be different as well.

While I personally don't think Mastodon should aim at being an exact replacement to Twitter, I do hope Mastodon can be useful to more people wanting an alternative to Twitter! And I know there are lots of room for improvement, on things we do know, and on things we don't.

Also keep in mind that Mastodon is developed by only two core developers payed through a non-profit funded through sponsorship, grants and donations, so please be patient!

With my (perfectly capable) hardware not being Win11 compatible I've been looking at using Visual Studio Code on Linux (Ubuntu running on a 2013 iMac).

A few hours getting things sorted out and now have an asp.net core 3.1 application (web and api) building, running and connecting to a mysql database.

Still some work to do and I know I will need to use the Mac for my development going forward (for iOS anyway) but I'm keen to see how far I can take this.

So, @Mastodon account created, 2FA enabled, initial follows sorted and Android app installed.

Still need to locate some suitable tech instances but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Let's get this party started 🎉

I guess first thing should be my .

I'm a software developer interested in many, many, many things, e.g. programming, technology, games (without time to play them 😞). My latest hobby is to watch and learn about birds living nearby.

I heard few good things about this place but I was always to lazy to check it myself. Yesterdays info made me move 🙂 I hope to stay here and find a lot of interesting things and maybe meet some people.

E*on M*sk - thanks for convincing me to move here

I’ll never forget where I was the moment that Elon Musk bought Twitter (I was on Mastodon)

when you buy a social network and everyone leaves

forever elon

So, here I am looking to give @Mastodon another try - maybe I didn't give it a fair go last time.
