To be honest I had the intention to hold back creating my account and wait so I could be the 500000th user.
But screw that.

@openscience @Gargron
Half a million users. You shouldn't be proud of that. It's not a thing to be proud of. It's a massive shame. It's a proof of the failure to decentralize. This instance gives home to half a million users and is still open. How many people are moderating here ? How hard their job must be ? Are they compensated for the work they give ? Is it enough ?

This instance should massively promotes going to other instances instead of letting people keep subscribing here.

It still misleads people to believe that mastodon.social = fediverse and nothing is really done against that.

@Electron @openscience It’s public information what our MAU is. And it’s not that much bigger than other servers’. The total number is just a nice milestone. Let people have fun with it

@tagada @Gargron @mthld 42k compared to 500k... lots of ghost-accounts on mastodon.social : people discovers mastoson with it and then some (most?) of them find a new instance to settle

@Oz @Gargron @mthld my point was : 42k is a lot. Not that much bigger than other servers’ MAU ? Not so sure.

@tagada @Gargron @mthld yeah, 42k is a lot, we can agree on that.

Still less than half a million. So mastodon is a little more decentralized than it might look. Even tho it still has some room for improvement !

@openscience

There used to be a bot which would regularly post estimated usership across the entire ActivityPub fediverse. I've always wondered whatever happened to that bot, and what those numbers are like now.

@openscience @Gargron I am proud to be part of this fine place, and I hope newcomers like you will too.

@openscience @Gargron Mastodon.social should close registrations. It makes no sense on a decentralized system to have 500.000 users (most of the userbase) on just one server. Promoting decentralisation on Mastodon should be a priority.

@Gargron @openscience That's right. Mastodon.social is like "the introduction to Mastodon". Many users register here, learn about fediverse, and decide to migrate to another server. But comparing Mastodon.social closing with facebook closing registrations and telling people going to Twitter makes no sense... Plus there's no effort from mastodon.social to make people know/learn about what the fediverse is and that joinmastodon exists.

@Gargron social plays an important role, but still behaving like traditional centralized networks does no beneficiate the benefits of Mastodon and the Fediverse.

Lazy users will always exist, if a user gives up just before completing the registration I think this user won't last much on Mastodon as he won't understand how it works.

Having a user who doesn't know how it works and who will leave the networks vs a user informed about how it works and will join motivated to explore
