@hee_katie@mstdn.social @applebaumian @josephramoney@mastodon.online @caseynewton @feditips Please stop asking me to remove the one thing that makes Mastodon fundamentally different from traditional social media.
@Gargron @hee_katie@mstdn.social @applebaumian @josephramoney@mastodon.online @caseynewton @feditips Out of curiosity, what is your recommended way of adding context to a post you're boosting, so that readers more easily understand why something may be interesting/important/funny/etc.?
@josephramoney @applebaumian @caseynewton @hee_katie @feditips @Gargron @outfrost my take on that is.. you don’t necessarily need to. If you need to add commentary to explain a boost then should you really be boosting it?
@wiredfire @josephramoney@mastodon.online @applebaumian @caseynewton @hee_katie@mstdn.social @feditips @Gargron Yes. Just like if you text a link to a friend, you might also add a few words on why you're sending it. It's a normal human interaction. Context matters, and we're here to *talk* about things aren't we?
@applebaumian @hee_katie @josephramoney @outfrost @feditips @caseynewton @Gargron A boost should be to help those that follow you find things you think may interest them. That inherently starts conversations. If you want to talk about something in a post you can make your own post, & can add a link to the original post if useful.
@caseynewton @applebaumian @josephramoney @feditips @outfrost @Gargron @hee_katie in fact a post with a link is much more in line with you example of sharing something with a friend via a messaging app.
@wiredfire Except usually when I link something to a friend they don't have to copy that link, go to their own fedi instance, paste it into search, wait for fetch, then click on the post and interact with it. But besides the technical problem posed by federation - aren't you just proposing I quote the post, with extra steps?
@outfrost depends what you’re linking. If you’re linking a blog or news post with a friend, no interaction is available unless the page as comments that you’d need to jump through hoops to sign up to anyway.
So in your example of sending a friend a link it’s really not much different.
Plus if you’re using a decent app for Mastodon you can interact with a linked post with zero further steps.
@wiredfire If only there was a way to make this less complicated
@outfrost I’m not sure it is complicated, certainly no more so than sharing a link with a friend.
See post, get link, make new post, and away you go
@wiredfire Can't help but feel the somewhat patronising tone and I don't appreciate it.
@outfrost not intended at all, I’ll be mindful of my tone and apologies for that.
