@palin Maybe we postmenopausal women should do the same.

@palin
Well, when those coupons start showing up, there are probably local groups you can pass them on to. 🍼

@palin
I'm an old white male who will definitely be downloading and sharing my cycle on this app, starting tomorrow morning.

@palin @Rural_Canadian
I’m feeling a heavy flow day coming on…

@palin if an app like this is useful/helpful, I wonder if there's an opportunity for a zero-trust, anonymized, end to end encrypted solution hosted/based somewhere privacy friendly (Switzerland seems to be the de facto choice). Need to make sure any payment (one off, or subscription) also can't be tied to the account.

@Offbeatmammal
I don't think it's going to be very helpful by the time we get done with it ...😉

@palin ha ha! I was thinking as an alternative that actually helps women without making them more vulnerable. Happy to help confuse Flo as well ;)

@Offbeatmammal Awesome 👍
The more the merrier... globally!!

@Offbeatmammal @palin this is the kind of app that, apart from serving surveillance capitalism, doesn't really have a good reason to utilize cloud storage. So no hosting required :D

I know some friends that are pretty happy with bloodyhealth.gitlab.io/ which is open source and data stays on device

bloodyhealth.gitlab.iodrip. appdrip. menstrual cycle and fertility tracking

@Offbeatmammal @palin
It is something the state of Texas and after January the US government will try to subpoena.

@Offbeatmammal @palin why have hosting at all?

couldn't such data be stored… you know… local?

I mean, the most complicated operation I can see it doing on that data is… substraction of one date from another? I could do that with a pen on paper nearly as fast!

Other than that it's a bunch of predefined constants and info-texts?

@drazraeltod @palin that would make much more sense, unless there is value in comparative datasets (but making it optional and ensuring anonymity would be the only way people should opt in)

@Offbeatmammal There are actually apps out there, that save your menstrual data locally on your personal phone w/o a need to register an account or share any of your data with anyone else, e.g. "Drip". I feel quite safe using it. @palin

@levampyre @Offbeatmammal @palin Consider that a script-kiddie can hack your phone/PC to strip all the data without telling you. Further, a script-kiddie can act a n behalf of the state to give them plausible denial without a warrant needed. If you save data locally, at least consider encrypting it.

@ke7yxz Sure. But if you load everything into the cloud voluntarily they don't even need skript kiddy to hack your phone. Because you're presenting yourself on a silver plate. And sure, encrypt your local data or use the analogue calendar method for which they would need to raid your home to get the data. I'm sure it will happen though. Nazis raided homes in Germany all the time. They might not even rely on any real data to lock you up, because that's not the point.

@Offbeatmammal @palin

@levampyre @Offbeatmammal @palin I never suggested using the cloud. Stealing your digital data is so easy that it does not even require banging down your door.

@palin I've seriously thought about telling my gyno to put fake data in my medical records. Some pregnancies, abortions, and other strange things.

@sheiladebonis
We are going to have a blast with this...
It needs to go global so please get everyone you know on it.
We can crush them with false data...

@palin
Done! Had to lie about my age. Also, lied about menstruating and my weight.
@socprof

@ERBeckman
It's okay...
I am pregnant and will be aborting before long...

@palin @ERBeckman It's a very affirming app! I feel better about my fake self already!

@palin update, Flo tells me that my chances of getting pregnant just improved!

@ERBeckman
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wait until they find out you are pregnant and having problems...
I did for 2 days and then deleted the app.
Now I am going to call red states looking for abortion services.
Nebraska , Texas and Idaho...

@ERBeckman @palin @socprof Lying about weight is a time honored feminine tradition, so you’re doing good so far!

@palin i like to think of myself as a responsible plant owner, perhaps i should be tracking the cycle of my ornamental taro

@thegarbagebird
It will work...
And get ready to start calling clinics because you need advice...
Nebraska and Idaho are good...
So is Texas 😂😂

@palin yes, this is regarding my query last week about germination cycles. what would you recommend given the uncommonly dry spring? no, doctor, not tara, taro. t-a-r-o. ornamental taro

@palin Movember -> Flovember: pick a random period tracker app and say you’re a 26 year old woman and every day you see a red car in the morning is a day you’re “spotting red”.

Have fun.

@palin I don't understand how this is helpful. Can someone explain? Who are we trying to throw off?

@cubeofcheese @palin The app is tracking data that, when sold to data brokers, allows women who are pregnant to be identified. And whether or not they have an abortion.

@Janeishly @cubeofcheese @palin

Sure, but adding invalid data to one account does not invalidate data on another account. Using it "chaotically" will not make me appear pregnant, so it won't even pollute the sold dataset.

I don't see how that achieves anything. Wouldn't it be better to educate potential real users not to use this app in the first place?

@Janeishly @cubeofcheese @palin

Now, if someone were to write a script that creates a convincing simulation of real menstruation data, with the occasional pregnancy thrown in, and ideally allows to automatically add it to the app, I would totally be on board with that.

@Janeishly @cubeofcheese @palin generally speaking, random data doesn't do much. Chaos can be filtered out quite easily.

@cubeofcheese I have much the same question. I understand poisoning data, but the concern with this app (IF I understand it) is not about pooled data, but surveillance of individual accounts (people). So how will this help anyone?

@palin

@sennoma
It's just to clog the machinery...
That's it
Just like applying for jobs at the Heritage Foundation...
Clog the machine.

@palin Ah, that I understand. Sand in the gears. ✊

@sennoma
Many , many ways for all of us to resist without violence.
And we get to laugh while doing so .

@palin

I'll join the fun, let chaos reign!

@palin
OMG! I am not a woman, if I was there is no fking way I would answer the questions they are asking. I don't give a sht what benefit they claim they will provide, giving this information to a phone app is incredibly risky. Their user license tells you they will collect your data and snoop on you outside the app. NO! As a 60+ man let them try tracking my periods, and helping me understand them, but there is NO WAY you should tell them about yours. Please don't.

@geos @palin I mean, a huge number of people take a cotton swab to their cheeks and send their DNA to 24AndMe so it can be monetized, so my expectations are extremely low.

@drahardja @palin
No one should do that either. Contrary to what they may imply we have no real idea how the data is being the handled or where.

@palin Whoa. Just going through the initial quick setup gave me a headache, both for the length and the data gathered.

@palin additionally, we should encourage people to use apps such as "periodical" by Arno Welzel, which is privacy friendly.

@palin I realize this is a bit of fun, but I'll be the no fun security person and point out that this does, in fact, not help privacy or safety of anybody.

Chaotic/troll usage is easily filtered, and you add surveillance software to your phone (which they capitalize on no matter your use or intent).

But most importantly - any time spent "trolling" is lost forever.

Spend that time advocating privacy and human friendly alternatives instead.
