The whole compliance test suite was both to same implementers time and to save *me* time when evaluating backends! You pass the compliance? You have good docs? Quick once-over to check for malicious intentions? Ok I'm done, welcome to the fold.

Maybe not the best design lolsob…

The whole external backend thing was because I figured instead of having to write an XYZ backend, someone else would do it and at some point I'd add a line to the readme saying "add this to cargo.toml, add this to the notify invocation" and I'd be done.

I wrote an extensive acknowledgement that was partly to guilt myself into doing good work they'd be okay with having their name on and partly to say look! look! I stand on the shoulders of giants who helped me in not-only-tech ways! A lot of design was also to remove burden on me

There's many many things I did that can be read now (and probably then too) as trying to rebuild momentum. I wrote lots of docs, I wrote announces and glosses, I was experimenting with new contributing guides and approaches,

The first sentence is in ref to the previous comment: there's no nearby edge, no easy finish line, that's kind of the reason why I'm burning out, nevermind the whole "I've been burning out on Notify for 3 years" thing.

Spend less time badly rewriting small pieces of code and more time on actually important shit, is what I'm saying

And yeah, sometimes the crate has bugs, and sometimes it gets abandoned, and sometimes, and sometimes, and sometimes...

In the meantime Notify was years of work and there is literally nobody stepping up to take over or with a replacement, so shut the fuck up

Kinda getting tired of some Rustaceans being all like oh no deps are bad.

You spend 3 minutes writing a thing instead of depending on a crate, then 15 hours hunting the various bugs that crop up over the months, while you could have spent 15 seconds all up adding a good crate.

"I've also observed this bug's behaviour for months now"

Scheduled before I left on holiday (2/8), so I can think back / confirm / deny:

feeling like in some way, this break is the beginning of the end for working at $job. It won't be this year, it may be the next, it will be before two more.

Anyone know if there's a service for individuals for refrigerated parcel forwarding? I love fresh belgian chocolates but those can't be shipped (they need to stay below 10°C)...

The airport scale did not agree with me, but a very kind staff pushed it through anyway

While packing I made a packing list for the DoC / customs control in Auckland, and stuck one copy in the luggage and one copy on me. We'll see if that helps...

Show thread

According to my pocket scale (handy!) my cabin luggage is at 6.9kg and my check-in is at 29.8kg. Let's hope the airport scales agree
