In which I take back another part of my digital life and step up to actually own it. This time it's setting up my own file-syncing replacement for Dropbox/Google Drive with @nextcloud.

@patdavid I use my @nextcloud to share photos with my son's baseball team. I use public gallery links. I had one parent say to me: "Oh, you have the perfect photo sharing platform."

@ted @patdavid @nextcloud Love hearing about things like this! Are you both running on your own local servers or are you using a cloud provider of some sort (or something in-between)? I'm interested in doing this again. For a while I had this running on a not-powerful-enough dreamhost shared server, but I'd like to do it right.

@K_REY_C @ted @nextcloud I host my own. I already had a small server to run Plex (media) that doesn't see a huge load that often.

The bonus is the ability to throw terabytes of storage at it if I want to for cheap.

If I went hosted, I'd probably consider Linode (or DO if you wanted, but Linode has been great for me). $5 VPS, $0.10/GB of block storage.

@patdavid @ted @nextcloud I've got a small box running , but I don't have it pointed at the larger internet. My understanding is that it's possible to do so (and self-hosting local is my preference). Know of any good guides/primers?

Thanks all for the feedback here, everyone! Appreciate the ideas and help!

@nextcloud @ted @K_REY_C the guide in my post is a great one. There’s a couple of caveats if you’re expecting to move files from the nas directly into the NC environment, but otherwise it’s pretty straightforward. Feel free to ask any questions!

@patdavid @nextcloud @ted I'm going to try to (someone tell me this is stupid) run this in a VM running on my freenas install. I haven't started yet, but plan to generally follow the guide as stated.

@K_REY_C @nextcloud @ted I believe there's also an officially supported snap as well: uappexplorer.com/snap/ubuntu/n
