Is the pixelfed support live? I got an error when entering a pixelfed hostname.
@pixelfed Would be great if you could make the like, comment, and share icons a bit smaller. Maybe we can hide the top bar with the search field while scrolling down? Keep up the great work!
@penartur check again :)
@trwnh Yes, it is there now... but I think install instructions are gone?
@penartur updated docs are being worked on -- pixelfed is technically still not recommended to install unless you're brave or developing on it. 0.8.0 is the first real prerelease.
the instructions are mostly similar to any other php/laravel app: composer install, php artisan and start/enable horizon. more precise setup steps coming soon!
@penartur forgot to mention there is also a dockerfile if you have experience with docker. some tiny fixes currently not merged into it (horizon doesn't start automatically), but should work after making this one change: https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/commit/b672ae4ce6006ac359176dd4489416ceef0766a2
@trwnh I'm not a PHP developer, so all this sounds like magic words for me :) I hope that the updated docs will be there soon!
By the way, I made some detailed install instructions for Mastodon: https://github.com/penartur/mastodon-vps-tutorial
I'm going to write something similar for pixelfed, once I understand how to make it work...
@penartur one of the goals for 1.0 is to make installation as simple as running "composer install pixelfed" :) right now you have to install dependencies or use docker.
@trwnh I can install dependencies and can use docker. It's just right now there are no instructions on how to get pixelfed up and going with these?
I have no idea what to do with that pixelfed dockerfile. Should I just `docker build` it into some temporary directory? And then what? `docker-compose run something`? At what stage do I configure it?
Or should I just forget about it and wait for another couple of months until v1.0 is released?
@penartur officially the recommendation is to wait a month (april 17 is the target)
i'm not exactly familiar with dockerfiles but i think you can use "docker-compose up -d" in the root of your cloned git repo?
@trwnh Looks like now we'll have to wait for some more months? https://mastodon.social/@dansup/101882232072710974
@penartur fwiw april 17 is still the target for 0.9 -- 1.0 may be around may 17, but no promises until 0.9 is released obviously! although maybe some instructions can be written up on how to install a dev instance by then...
@trwnh Can't wait for new docs now! :)
Still I'm very disappointed that federation support between Pixelfed instances is still not available. I don't understand this is not a priority, even more than federation support for other fediverse projects. Imagine that Mastodon federation first work only with Pleroma and Peertube, and later between Mastodon instances itself. Wouldn't be logical to make sure your own product can federate with itself first?
Why am I keeping saying this? It's because I have a Pixelfed (pixelfed.nl) instance that I want to open up to the public (for a while now). But it is useless without be able to see images from e.g. pixelfed.social.
@pixelfed Congratulations! And thank you very much for your hard work. May I ask you about the status of the documentation? You mentioned earlier that it will be updated in January.
