In Star Trek: The Next Generation, they can construct really advanced computer programs with simple voice commands in natural language. But to change the settings for the transporter, they have to take it apart, and O'Brian sounds like he's talking about modular synthesizers or something.


It's probably because the transporter is too important to be controlled by the main computer during manual operations?
