I'm vegan, my wife is vegetarian and our kid is omni. I gotta figure out how to get him off milk.

The more I think about how dairy is made, the more I'm convinced it's the worst thing humans do.

@potatono Worse than wars and drugs and tyrannical governments, definitely.

@potatono I mean, if you dont wanna count the whole genocide thing, or income disparity, or systematic racism, or...

@potatono In the alternative milk department soy milk is your best bet for a growing kid.. stick with unsweetened. Rice, almond, etc are all extremely low in protein so they're poor substitutes. And most soymilks are fortified with calcium and vit D, although it's good to check the label. Also works fine as a sub for milk in baking, I do it all the time. I'm allergic to whey so soy milk is all we have in the house.

@intherain yeah i've tried the soy milk route a few times, usually when we run out of the dairy stuff. he knows the difference and rejects it immediately..

@potatono :( It took me a while to get used to it.. I discovered the whey allergy only about 5 years ago and was drinking regular milk before that (and wondering why I got heartburn every time, lol). Now I honestly prefer the taste of soy. We tend to develop food preferences around happy associations. If you think he would enjoy helping you make it from scratch (it's not hard) doing that once or twice as an activity might help him come around. Best: serve it with cookies.

@intherain Making it is a good idea, I'll try that..

@potatono You can think about how dairy is made and it could seem awful. Or, you could connect with the source of the milk (visit a dairy, meet a cow, milk a cow) and suddenly it won't seem so awful, or mechanical, or remote, or so it seems to me.
